Paul Fleming

Milwaukee, Wisconsin | 1973

Pathways (Proposal #5/6). First Commissioned 2014, Re-commissioned 2021. Hydrocal and resin. Site Installation.

Paul Fleming received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design in 1996.

Captivated by the forms of everyday objects, such as snow cone cups or beverage dispensers, Fleming casts the objects in hydrocal and utilizes the voids as vessels for colored resin. Stripped of their conventional function, the objects are transformed into non-objective elements that examine the formal aspects of material and form. Color interactions either steadily graduate or abruptly dissipate — seen in the translucent layers of pigmented resin resembling glass-like pools that vary in depth and opacity. Volume, repetition, and scale are integral to Fleming’s process as the individual elements are duplicated to create immersive, rhythmic patterns.

His group exhibitions include Sergio Tossi Arte Contemporanea, Florence, Italy; AR Contemporary, Milan, Italy; the Art League Houston, Texas; the University of Houston, Texas; and the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. Fleming’s work is also included in the collections of Neiman Marcus, BBVA Compass, Lime Rock Partners, and Crest Investments.

Paul Fleming lives and works in Houston, Texas.
